The Heart of Fernwood SOLD

This is the heart of Victoria's Fernwood

neighbourhood with all of the "art and heart" buildings

that I mention in one of my earlier posts.

The building to the far left is the Belfry Theatre and the building

behind the pink cherry tree is home to the She Said Gallery.

Across the street there is the Fernwood Inn

and the Cornerstone Cafe.

The black dog from "In Fernwood" found it's way

into this one

and so did a VW van...

Happy Valentine's Day!

This week I had the pleasure of

being invited to do a demonstration for

Studio 30 Art Club, (a wonderful, friendly

group of artists who meet in Saanich), and
this scene of
Victoria's Chinatown is the result.

I was inspired by the reds with the bits of

blue and the one round shape among all of the rectangles.

Coton Girls SOLD

Coton's Grocery, (originally named Round the Corner),

was a small neighbourhood grocery store operated

by Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Coton and their three

daughters Eileen, Pat, & Marjorie.

Marjorie's daughter, Mary, (who commissioned this painting),

remembers working in the store as well.

Although the building is currently used as a

private residence, it is on record as

"the best preserved storefront in Esquimalt".

Floating Flowerpot NFS

This little boat was home

for my first seven years in Victoria.

The boat's real name was the'Casa Miga',

(friendly house or home of friends),

but the captains of the Harbour Ferry Tour boats

dubbed it 'The Floating Flowerpot'.

It was a wonderful lifestyle,

full of all sorts of challenges, that all made sense

- during the summer months!

My other outdoor painting adventure this week

was to High Rock Park in Esquimalt where

these two oaks were doing their dips and glides

on the velvety green dance floor.

Train and Buildings SOLD

I enjoyed two outdoor painting adventures this week.

The first, on Tuesday, was to the Vic West E & N rail yard with fellow painter fellows, Jeffrey J. Boron, Adam Noonan and Bob McPartlin. The heritage buildings of the rail yard are next to the the tall buildings of the Songhees development and across the street from the Vic West Park skate park.

It was a beautiful sunny morning, although a bit windy near the finish, and while I was packing up to leave I had an easel mishap which resulted in a small, but gritty, "train wreck" that required a bit of repair back in the studio.

Freddie's Flowers

Freddie's Flowers, almost on the corner, corner store is

located at the junction of Oak Bay and Victoria on Fort Street.

During the summer Victoria's boulevards bloom with

colorful plantings and this one was in just the right location

to be claimed by the store's signage.

(While I was painting this one the bike rider morphed into a

free-wheeling young fellow named Freddie.)

Road Tripper

Vining Street in Fernwood is lined with beautifully

restored heritage homes,

some of Victoria's oldest and most majestic cherry trees

and one VW van in mint conditon.

Chinatown Cherry Tree

In the spring this cherry tree blooms at the entrance to the

Chinese Public School in Victoria's Chinatown.

As well as the abundance of blossoms,

it was the red on the building and the

big globes on the gate pillars that attracted me to

this scene.
